Work for a ‘Best In Class’ Company

ACR was named one of the top twelve large companies in Minnesota for the 6th time in 2020 as well as one of the top two providers for services for people with disabilities! This was all due to employee feedback through a survey done with the Star Tribune. ACR has also received a Special Award for New Ideas for its employee suggestion program called “Open Sourcing” which encourages collaborative thinking, as well as a special award for Ethics & Values.

What makes ACR such a great company to work for? Here’s some inside scoop from  a new ACR employee.

A Testimonial on Being a New Employee at ACR, by Kelsey Vaillancourt

One of the first things I saw in the ACR Homes administrative offices, hanging on the wall next to me as I waited for my interview, was that ACR Homes has been voted the top workplace in Minnesota in both 2014 and 2016. After a little research, I found that this vote was done through the StarTribune by employees themselves. I also discovered that being voted the #1 workplace for large employers twice is unprecedented!

Being a new employee is always a little scary. However, knowing that my coworkers enjoy working for ACR was a comfort to me as I started my direct care training. I was also fortunate enough to be chosen to participate in the internship program, which will be a great experience to put on my resume as I apply to graduate schools.

“I can see why employees have such high regard for ACR”

Although I’m new, I can already see why employees have such high regard for ACR. The management has made sure that my new employee experience was not confusing or overwhelming. I met with a human resources employee on my orientation day and we scheduled my direct care training together, making sure that it would go at a pace I was comfortable with. I have also had the opportunity to meet with all the supervisors and coordinators that I will work with, which ensured that any questions I had were answered.

When I first saw that StarTribune article hanging on the wall in the office, I admit that I thought employees enjoyed working for ACR Homes because providing care for people with disabilities and the elderly is a rewarding experience. However, the company goes beyond giving its employees rewarding opportunities. There is work being done here, right from the start, to make sure new employees have positive experiences before ever setting foot into a resident’s home.

Feedback from several employees pointed to ACR’s Core Values Statement that “all human life is intrinsically valuable and worthy of dignity and respect” as an example of the strong values in ACR’s workplace culture. Employees also commented on how inspiring it is to work for a company where excellence in resident care is the main focus, where their coworkers’ standards are high, and where the focus is on doing what it takes to deliver high quality care. One employee wrote in the survey, “ACR has incredible values when it comes to caring about the people that we support.” Another wrote, “ACR does everything they can to give the residents the highest quality of life possible.” Still another wrote, “It’s easy to feel like you are part of the team when you know that your values line up with the values of your company’s leadership.”

A Great Workplace Culture for New Employees

Newer employees, in particular, indicated in the survey that they appreciate the positive workplace culture at ACR. They note that people like doing work that matters with people who share similar high standards in care. One newer employee commented, “My coworkers always come to work with a positive attitude and set a great example for new employees like me.” Another commented, “Whenever I leave after a shift I know that I made a difference in someone’s life. I love that my job is meaningful and enjoyable. I have amazing co-workers, and the environment of ACR Homes is such a positive one.”
